Climate Justice Festival

The City of San Leandro will be hosting their first annual Climate Action Festival to engage families, youth, and community members on the education at the intersection of climate change, resilience, and equity. The day will provide multiple ways of engagement across art, repair, storytelling, film, and more. Programming will include screenings of film shorts and a panel discussion with the SF Urban Film Fest, tabling by local climate and community groups, free bike repair and education with BikeMobile, a dance performance by Black Indigenous and Deaf led Urban Jazz Dance Company, and more! A complimentary light lunch of banh mi sandwiches and veggie rolls will be served from Cafe Sorriso. ASL interpretation will be provided. Masks will be strongly encouraged to attend.

Program Agenda:

10am: Festival opens, BikeMobile ready for repair
10:30-11:30am: Screening of "Mama Wanda's Garden School" short and panel with Wanda Stewart and Dr. Hoi-Fei Mok
11:30am-12pm: Light lunch served, open tabling*
12-12:30pm: Welcome speech and performance by Urban Jazz Dance Company*
12:30-1pm: Storytelling session
1-2pm: Screening of "In Love With A Problem" short and panel with Jeanny Yao and SF Urban Film Fest
2pm: Post-event family friendly bike ride with Cherry City Cyclists to San Leandro Marina, appx 1 hr.
*outdoor activities in the patio, limited shade available

How to Get There:

There is some parking in the parking lot behind the Boys and Girls Club. You can enter the parking lot on San Leandro Blvd or Marina Blvd. Street parking is also available in the surrounding neighborhood. You are also encouraged to bike or walk!
The front entrance is facing the parking lot behind the building on San Leandro Blvd.
What to Bring:

Note that the BikeMobile will be on site for bike repairs from 10am-1pm and will be first come first serve, so make sure to bring your bike by early!
Masks are strongly encouraged for the event.
Be ready to sit under the sun for lunch - bring sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, picnic blanket!
Alameda County Bike Mobile:

If your bike or your child’s bike is making one of those mystery sounds or collecting dust because it has a flat tire, bring it to Boys and Girls Club between 10am-1pm. The BikeMobile can fix flat tires, adjust brakes and gears, and even replace broken or worn out parts like chains, seats, and tires. The only thing it can’t do is replace missing wheels or gears. While the mechanics work on your bike they’ll explain how it works and how to keep it running smooth. Bike or no bike, everyone is welcome to attend to learn about maintenance, safety, and more! This is a first come, first serve event. We can only guarantee to fix the first 20 bikes that sign up, so please come early! SF Urban Film Fest:

The SF Urban Film Fest gathers a diverse, engaged audience and uses the power of storytelling to spark discussion and civic engagement around urban issues. We ask what it means to live together and create just and equitable cities. We are an interdisciplinary storytelling organization that produces an annual film festival, year-round film-based discussion events, and long-term community storytelling projects to make our cities more healthy, inclusive, and culturally abundant. In pursuit of our mission, SFUFF empowers the communities of color affected to confront urban issues by centering their stories and community-generated policy solutions. Our bottoms-up strategy is informed by our theory of change that we must work in the overlapping spheres of narrative, spatial, and social justice simultaneously. Spatial justice means we make urban planning more equitable and just. Urban Jazz Dance Company:

Founded in 2007 by Deaf dancer and choreographer Antoine Hunter, Urban Jazz Dance Company’s (UJDC) mission is to uplift and provide opportunities for Deaf, Hard of hearing (Hoh) and Disabled artists from marginalized backgrounds. UJDC amplifies visibility and creates opportunities for Deaf artists through programming by 1) being a Deaf-led dance company highlighting Deaf experiences, 2) teaching dance classes to Deaf and hearing dancers, 3) annually producing the Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival (BAIDDF) and social justice Deaf Louder November home seasons, both platforms for Deaf artists to celebrate their talents through performance/workshops that engage 70 artists and 750 attendees, 4) Deaf Dance Festivals in other locations including San Diego, Rochester NY and Turkey, 5) touring Deaf’s IMPRISONED Internationally, a production exploring Deaf Diaspora and how a Deaf person lives in a “prison within a prison”, 6) school engagements serving over 5,800 youth per year with 47% of whom are from low income backgrounds, 8) community workshops with local museums and organizations, 9) the ongoing virtual #DeafWoke and 10) teaching contracted organizations Deaf/Disabled access/inclusion practices through UJDC Access Services program.
