Resilient schools and cities don’t just bounce back, they reimagine a more equitable and joyful system for and with young people.

Each spring, UC Berkeley’s Center for Cities + Schools (CC+S) hosts a culminating Y-PLAN Summit to bring together students, teachers, civic officials, and higher education partners to showcase the powerful recommendations young people have for city and regional leaders.
This is also an important learning opportunity for young people and adults within the Y-PLAN community of practice, which transcends geography, sector, and discipline.
After two years of online learning, new partners and exciting opportunities have emerged. One is a partnership with UC Berkeley’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and their new program, Engineering for Change (E4C, or e-force). E4C developed as part of CEE’s broader initiative in Community-Engaged Education (CEE²).
E4C focuses on experiential learning, in the form of hands-on demonstrations and experimentation, to introduce students to civil and environmental engineering topics that are relevant to their communities. Beginning in spring of 2022, CEE has further enriched the longstanding partnership between CC+S and the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
This summit will feature the collaborative efforts of over 300 OUSD students and community partners working to build a more just and joyful Oakland.
